Interview with member of the Congress of Deputies of Spain Jon Inarritu.
-What triggered the sudden escalation in fightng in Nagorno Karabakh on Sunday, September 27.
-I think that there is no single reason. I suppose that the internal situation in Azerbaijan has motivated President Aliyev to try to find an external enemy, attacking Artshak and Armenia, to unite his state. On the other hand, I believe that situations such as that of Belarus have made the tyrannical Azeri government nervous, for fear of riots. A war is always a factor of internal cohesion. Finally, I imagine that Erdogan’s neo-Ottomanist strategy has influenced Azerbaijan to seek the help of its partner.
-How far might willing to go Azerbaijan to secure their respective goals?
– Azerbaijan has shown its contempt for human rights and international legality. They have even shown their dishonesty by violating ceasefires. The Aliyev Government has shown no limits. Faced with this situation, the international community should recognize Artsakh as a State. Azerbayan has invalidated any claim on that territory. The citizens of Artsakh aspire to live in peace and security and that must be guaranteed.
-What you can say about Turkey role?..
– As I mentioned before, the AKP Government has two agendas until now hidden, one Islamist and the other neo-Ottoman. Turkey’s role in the Mediterranean, the Middle East and now in the Caucasus is very worrying. There is no conflict in which it does not intervene to destabilize. Greece, Cyprus, Syria, Libya, Kurdistan, Artsakh …
-Why Spain did not support Greece and vetoed the decision to impose sanctions on Turkey?
-Apparently, the Spanish Government would be mediating between Athens and Ankara, supporting Germany’s position. From my point of view, mediation is always good, but Turkey’s attitude is intolerable and the common position of the Member States of the European Union should be stronger vis-à-vis Turkey.
-How can settle the conflict? With the Minsk Group or other diplomati channels?
– From my point of view, I think that the members of the Minsk Group should have a more demanding role, regarding Azerbaijan. On the other hand, the time has come to seek a definitive solution to Artsakh’s situation, recognizing the will of his citizens. The international community should recognize Artsakh, that would prevent further offensives, therefore it would help peace.
